Juvederm Voluma & Restylane Lyft for Cheek Augmentation

Imagine high, killer cheekbones! You know you want them now! The great news is you can create the perfect features with amazing dermal fillers, like Juvederm’s Voluma and the newest “injectable” recently FDA approved, Restylane Lyft. These two fillers are designed to not just fill in a line, but to add appealing volume to areas of the face like the cheeks.

The results are natural-looking, more youthful and a face that shows buoyancy and fullness. Today’s dermal fillers have advanced to an incredible degree, because beauty science keeps discovering brand new, non-invasive treatments that avoid the surgical knife.

If you ask an experienced plastic surgeon about the popular face lift, he or she will probably mention the value of adding dermal fillers post surgery. That is how most surgeons supplement a face lift these days. Plastic surgery alone will tighten and pull back a sagging face but it will not add youthful volume.

That is why fillers featuring big volumi-zers like Juvederm Voluma and Restylane Lyft have truly revolutionized the world of dermatology. Fillers are fun, quick, safe, painless and you see the beautiful results instantly! What’s not to love?

Both Voluma and Lyft are hyaluronic acid injectables. Both soft filler products achieve mid-face rejuvenation for natural results that are long-lasting. Voluma can last up to two years with optimal correction, whereas Lyft stays in the face for 10 to 18 months on average. Most people require two syringes of filler to achieve amazing cheekbones.

Juvederm Voluma and Restylane Lyft are both excellent choices for enhancing the cheek area of the face. Whether you are 20 or 70 years young, the results are incredible and can truly transform your appearance in mere minutes.

The efficacy and safety profile of both soft fillers make it a great choice for many patients.

Varicose Veins vs Spider Veins: What’s the difference?

Women despise spider veins and especially varicose veins; both common imperfections seem to spoil the beauty of one’s legs. If you have them, then you know what these bothersome skin conditions look like. Maybe you are constantly trying to cover up these veins with pantyhose or spray-on tans.

Does this sound like you? Continue reading to learn the difference between spider veins and varicose veins.

Spider veins are less bothersome and found on the surface of one’s legs. Spider veins are very thin blue blood vessels that appear as minute, reddish squiggly lines. Correction of spider veins is purely cosmetic. Varicose veins are a different story; with a thick, ropier appearance, varicose veins can bulge and become medically necessary to correct. These stretched-out veins gather where blood has pooled and can often be seen protruding out of the legs. It is not unusual to have both spider veins and varicose veins in one leg.

Physicians say that having either vein issue is genetic, but that spider veins and/or varicose veins can also skip a generation, so you can’t really blame either parent for inheriting them. Plus, pregnancy can cause the development of both types of venous disease as hormone overload encourages the smooth muscle of the veins to relax, which increases their storage capacity and propensity to dilate.

Professional treatment like sclerotherapy injects a foam into your veins which irritates them, causing collapse. Multiple treatments might be necessary, but the procedure is non-invasive and takes only about 15 minutes.

Vascular laser treatments can tackle your leg veins of different sizes by sealing up the blood vessel without harming surrounding skin.

What does the Allergan Black Diamond designation mean?

When thinking of skin care and the treatment of wrinkles, what word first comes to mind? It was more than likely the word Botox, right?

Botox Cosmetic, Juvederm injectable gels, and Latisse eyelash growth enhancements are a few of the many brands manufactured from a leading health care company called Allergan.  When searching for a physician specializing in these areas, you may have noticed the physician or facility was honored with a Black Diamond award from Allergan (such as here at Ultra Smooth Skin in Scottsdale and Chandler, AZ).

Why is this award relevant to you? Well, once a year, Allergan awards aesthetics clinics nationwide through its “Allergan Partner Privileges” program (APP). This unique program awards status levels to clinics based on the volume of Allergan products purchased. The status levels start at Silver and progress through Gold, Platinum, Platinum Plus, Diamond and Black Diamond. The Black Diamond designation is awarded to an elite group of medical aesthetics practices who are among the top one percent of all Allergan’s injectors in the United States. This includes a very small group out of more than thirty thousand accounts in the United States offering Allergan products.

Although medical aesthetics practices awarded Allergan’s Black Diamond status have purchased high volumes of Allergan products, the Black Diamond designation is one of the most prestigious and sought-after awards within the cosmetic and skin care fields. Allergan rewards these clinics with quarterly rebates so they can pass those savings on to you, the patient.

DIY Skin Care Tips from Pinterest You Should Ignore

Don’t believe everything you read on the internet, especially when you’re looking for DIY beauty and skin care tips from Pinterest.

If you’re jumping at any Pinterest post that promises “perfect skin” without doing your research beforehand, you might end up making a big mistake that can cause major damage to your skin and require a trip to your aesthetician or dermatologist to help reverse skin damage.  To save you from potential harm and a terrible experience, we’ve curated this list of DIY skin care tips that you should just walk away from:

DIY Self Tanner: On Pinterest, you’re promised sun-kissed glowing skin just by applying a homemade paste of cocoa powder and lotion all over your body. This results in a less than beautiful, streaky looking mess. Oh and you’ll smell like brownies all day…yum, but not so yum!  Stick with the spray tans that are proven to work.

DIY Salt & Honey Acne Treatment: While Pinterest makes you believe that the combination of table salt and honey will clear up your acne, they couldn’t be any more wrong. Salt has been rated a 5 out of 5 in the amount of clogging it can do to your pores. Just say no and walk away girls.

DIY Sunscreens: Let’s get one thing straight, while your cupboard might have all the ingredients to produce some delicious brownies, it is not a science lab where you can create a magic potion to protect you from the dangerous cancer causing rays of the sun! Leave this one to the professionals, please!

Coconut Oil For Everything: Chances are, your DIY beauty Pinterest boards are full of pins screaming about the magical wonders of coconut oil and it’s many uses. While some of them are true, like the hair masks and such, anytime you’re told to put it on your face, forget about it! Coconut oil has been proven to be one of the biggest culprits in clogging pores. Again, just let it go and say no-no, unless your dermatologist has instructed you to use it for severely dry skin.

Bottom Line:  Stick with clinically proven, medical-grade skin care treatments prescribed to you by a dermatologist or recommended by your aesthetician or licensed skin care professional.  Eat the stuff in your kitchen; don’t rub it on your face.

How to Prevent Sleep Wrinkles

Sleep wrinkles are lines that are formed on the face when it is compressed against a pillow each night. They tend to occur in predictable locations based on the fixed anchor points that hold the skin to the bone. They disappear on younger skin but eventually become permanent on older skin due to constant compression and decreased skin elasticity.

Botox is ineffective on sleep wrinkles. So how can sleep wrinkles be prevented?

Sleeping on your back is one good way to prevent sleep wrinkles, if you find it comfortable. Sleeping on your stomach or sides causing your face to compress against your pillow, which in turn causes sleep wrinkles. Not to mention, sleeping on your sides can also cause a crease in between your breasts, and sleeping on your stomach is often argued to be unhealthy for other reasons. Sleeping on your back causes clearer, firmer skin and better back alignment.

There are anti wrinkle creams and fillers which can help treat sleep wrinkles, but they will likely come back if you do not address the real problem which is causing them in the first place: facial compression. Minimize your facial contact with your bedding as much as possible.

A supportive anti wrinkle pillow could be a solution. It prevents facial contact while you sleep. This combined with an anti wrinkle cream can help to prevent sleep wrinkles.  If you can’t get an anti-aging pillow, consider a silk pillow case for a smoother surface. It won’t prevent all of the sleep wrinkles, but it will decrease the damage caused.

Another cause of wrinkles is not getting enough sleep. Not getting enough sleep can cause puffiness under the eyes and adds more stress to the body.  Every organ in your body suffers when you’re sleep deprived; your skin is your largest organ, and it will begin to show wear and tear from lack of sleep.  If you seem to be looking older than you should, and you know you’re not getting enough sleep, work on clocking more hours per night.  See your doctor if you have insomnia or if you’re concerned you’re not sleeping well despite the hours in bed.

Finally, be sure to always wash your face before bed.  Pollution, dirt, oil and makeup grind themselves into the pores at night, causing them to enlarge, become clogged and break you out.  Cleanse thoroughly and apply a high-quality night cream nightly.  If you’re looking for suggestions, schedule an appointment with us and we’ll help you find the right products for you.

Considering the Safety of Laser Skin Treatment

Thousands of American women turn to laser skin treatment every year in hopes of looking younger and erasing skin damage. You may have considered this cosmetic procedure, but are concerned about its safety and its affects on your general health after hearing stories about patients being burned by lasers or disfigured.

Practical laser technology has been around for more than 50 years, and is today used in a number of ways. The use of laser light as a cosmetic procedure came into existence two decades ago, and it has since become one of the most popular methods of improving the appearance of the skin.

Laser treatment uses pulsating beams of light to peel away the various layers of skin that contain abnormalities usually associated with aging or with excessive exposure to the sun. The method is considered effective for removing fine lines or wrinkles that often develop around the eyes and mouth, and for eliminating other imperfections in the skin, including acne. Laser treatment can be used to tighten the skin and also to increase the production of youthful collagen.

Performed by a qualified, certified and licensed practitioner, a laser procedure can be accomplished without any significant damage to the area being treated. Although the patients who undergo the procedure may experience a period of sensitivity in the treated area, the effects are usually mild and should go away within a reasonable period of time. Procedures that are more involved can usually be carried out in increments, which will prevent infections and any other long-term consequences. No other adverse effects on the body, including cancer, have ever been associated with laser skin treatment.

There are actually different types of laser machines, with some producing less powerful beams that are even easier on the skin. Those of you who are considering such a procedure should first consult with a skin care expert to determine what type will be most effective in helping you achieve the appearance you desire.

Treating Hyperpigmentation

You’ve enjoyed fun summer activities like biking, hiking, boating and swimming, but as summer comes to an end, you may be seeing changes to your hair and skin that you don’t enjoy.

If your hair is dry and bleached out, you don’t have to worry because summer hair can be conditioned and recolored. But, what can you do to treat the dark splotches you see on your face, hands, neck or du00e9colletage?

Your skin is on your side. It tries to protect you from sun damage by creating a dark brown pigment called melanin. Sometimes, your skin tries too hard to keep you from harm, and your melanin production becomes excessive. This is when you’ll see signs of uneven skin tone called hyperpigmentation.

Hyperpigmentation is not always easy to treat. Once the harm is done, it’s a challenge to repair the effects of sun damage. The best way to deal with hyperpigmentation is to avoid it in the first place. That’s why it’s imperative that you are diligent about using sunscreen products. Choose sunscreen that has an SPF rating of 15 or above and one that shields you from both UVA and UVB rays. Apply sunscreen liberally and frequently and limit your time in the sun.

Exfoliate and moisturize

Over-the-counter exfoliation products help to remove dead skin cells and may lighten spots and blotches through repeated use. Moisturizers help to keep your skin soft and supple so that skin discoloration is less noticeable.

Medical spas are able to help kick-start your skin to a more youthful, even-toned appearance by microdermabrasion treatments. Performed by a skin care specialist, a hand-held device gently removes the dry dead cells in the top layers of your skin. This treatment helps to fade brown spots and blotches.

Chemical peels

Chemical peels can rejuvenate sun-damaged skin, fade brown spots and give your skin a healthy, youthful glow. Peels vary in intensity from superficial peels for mild sun damage to aggressive peels for more serious cases of hyperpigmentation

Laser treatments

Sun-induced hyperpigmentation responds well to laser treatments. Your skin care expert can target the unsightly brown spots and blotches with pulses of light that break up the pigment into tiny particles that disappear during normal skin exfoliation.

Are you too young to start thinking about wrinkle prevention?

Wrinkles are something we all associate with aging, but prevention that will keep your skin firm and wrinkle-free in your later years can begin early. It might not be years until you see your first wrinkles show up, but by practicing good skin care today you can reduce wrinkles that will threaten you later on.

Our Skin, Our Selves
Our skin is our largest organ and a reflection of our health. Whatever we put into our bodies and expose our skin to will leave its mark on our health as well as our appearance. Wrinkles are a natural sign of aging and collagen loss, but there is much you can do, even as a teenager or young adult, to reduce wrinkles that show up later in life.

The best anti aging plan is to simply treat yourself well. Drink enough water, get enough sleep and don’t smoke cigarettes. These three things in themselves are perhaps the best anti wrinkle prevention possible. Nourish your body and avoid obvious toxins, such as cigarette smoke, and your middle age face will show less wear. You can buy facial creams and treatments to address the small wrinkles that do develop, too, so your skin is always smooth.

Boring Old Sunscreen
You’ve surely been told it more than once, but it still stands worth repeating: wear sunscreen! Research shows that up to 90% of skin damage comes from the sun. Exposure to UV rays damages your skin cells and this can have lasting effects. The best wrinkle creams won’t save you in the long run if you don’t take the simplest anti aging step possible: stay out of the sun. However, if sun damage has already been done, wrinkle creams can help you reduce the effect and look your best.

Avoid direct sunlight and, when you are out in it, wear light, airy clothing to protect your skin. When choosing a sunscreen, make sure it is SPF 15 at the very least and don’t forget to apply regularly. Though direct sunlight certainly presents the most danger, it is a smart anti wrinkle practice to apply sunscreen on bright days, even if they are cloudy.

Simple Wrinkle Creams
As a young adult, take good care of your skin. Don’t let it get too dry or too oily. Wash off makeup with a gentle soap every night to keep your pores fresh. It’s also a good idea to give your face a break from makeup now and then, too. When your face is freshly clean, apply Vitamin E oil to revitalize the area as well as decrease whatever wrinkle lines may already be appearing.

Glowing Skin or Greasy Skin? How to Get the Perfect Tone

While you may wish for the perfect glowing skin, you may have actually achieved the shine of greasy skin. This is a frustrating problem if you are trying to strike the balance between over-drying your skin and looking as if your skin care regimen consists of primarily petroleum jelly. Here are a few things to remember to get the right kind of glow:

  • Quality skin care starts with eating quality foods.

  • If your main idea of a healthy fat and protein combination is pepperoni pizza, do not be surprised if your face starts to look like one. Adding omega-3 fats from fish and avoiding processed and sugar-laden foods will boost your skin’s health and decrease excess oil production.

  • Proper hydration will flush out impurities.

  • Since your body is primarily made of water, drinking plenty of fluids makes good sense. Your skin is your largest organ, and pure water will keep bacteria moving through instead of seeping through your pores and causing blemishes.

  • Harsh scrubbing will not remove oil.

  • Using cleansers with a lot of chemicals or rough scrubbing action on the skin will actually cause more oil to produce. Gentle is always best when cleansing. If you find a gentle cleanser is not working, buy a product with salicylic acid. Washing once in the morning and once in the evening is enough no matter how oily your skin is.

  • Know what to look for in a face cream.

  • If you have a tendency towards greasy skin, be careful when choosing a moisturizer. Avoid products with an oil base by looking for ingredients that end in “-cone.” Do not make the mistake of avoiding face cream even if your skin is oily. Moisturizers form a protective barrier and benefit all skin types.

  • Avoid alcohol in your skin toner.

  • While you may think you need an alcohol-based skin toner to combat your greasy skin, its use may actually backfire. If you remove too much moisture from the skin, your skin responds by producing more oil. As with your moisturizer, use a gentle product.

  • Seek the advice of a professional.

  • There are some products on the market for extremely oily skin that does not respond to over-the-counter cleansers and toners and gentler skin care methods. Ask your dermatologist if these would be right for you.

    Top 10 celebrity skin secrets

Magazine headlines advertise our favorite celebrities’ flawless skin every time we stand in line at a grocery store. Sometimes it is a special new product that causes all the fuss, while other times it’s claimed that a secret long held by those so often photographed has finally been released to the public. What do celebrities and other people used to being in front of a camera do to make sure their skin looks smooth and radiant?

    1. Sun Smarts
It might seem tedious to apply sunscreen — even on cloudy days, but this is one of the very best ways you can keep your skin healthy. Research shows that up to 90% of damaged skin comes from the sun. So cover up! Celebrities do it as part of a healthy skin care lifestyle that leaves them always looking their best.

    2. Water For the Win
Another simple skin trick that celebrities are famous for is simply staying hydrated. Drink at least eight cups of water a day and your skin will remain youthful and radiant.

    3. Simply Smile
In grade school, we all learned the fun fact that “frowning uses more muscles than smiling.” Plus, happiness is the best anti aging regimen out there. To make this work for you, make a habit of smiling sincerely. Get used to what a happy, healthy smile feels like to maintain skin and general body health.

    4. Necessary Napping
Getting enough sleep is key to feeling and looking good, and your skin is no exception. Celebrities have famously busy schedules, but adequate sleep is a great rejuvenator. Make sure to get your eight hours of shut eye as often as possible and take naps to catch up when needed.

    5. Circulation Solutions
One of the main physiological reasons skin can look dull is from a lack of blood circulation. If the mirror reveals your skin looking dull, use clean fingertips to gently pat your cheekbones, temples and jawline.

    6. Puffy Eye Protection
Dark, puffy half circles under your eyes are a classic sign of being tired. However, water retention is at fault for the unattractive condition and can cause it even when you have gotten plenty of rest. Drink lots of water and reduce your salt intake to help soothe swollen eye bags.

    7. Know Your Skin
If there is one thing celebrities know, it is how to look their best. This means they have an intimate and educated knowledge of their skin and body type and know what will make them feel and look fabulous. Take the time to learn about your unique skin so that you know which face cream and anti aging products can best assist you in looking and feeling radiantly healthy.

    8. DIY Astringents
Looking your best at all times means being creative with the things you use to freshen up. Don’t have access to your favorite wrinkle creams and skin toner products? Lemon juice is an effective astringent, meaning it helps clean pores and works as a skin toner.

    9. DIY Moisturizers
Once your face has been cleansed and toned, you need to moisturize to keep your pores healthy. Simple olive oil works as a moisturizing face cream in a pinch. Knowing around-the-house skin care solutions to everyday skin problems means you are never caught off guard.

    10. Wrinkle Worries
Anyone over the age of 25 has peered into the mirror and worried about the onset of wrinkles. Celebrities’ careers can depend on how young they look, so they are experts in keeping young, firm skin. Do your research and find wrinkle creams with key ingredients that your skin type requires.
